Knowing who to hire can be a bit hit and miss, unless you know what questions to ask beforehand. With this in mind, here are tips that will help your choice:
How many cameras?
If you’ve opted for the long form of video then you should expect your wedding videographer to be using a minimum of three cameras. One on the groom’s side which actually covers the best views and close ups of the bride. One on the groom’s side which covers the guests; and a third at the rear to capture a wide overview of the entire proceedings. At least two of the cameras should be mounted on tripods.
Don’t forget to ask how many camera people there will be. When you ask this question you want a reply of two people, since this is a good number to cover all aspects of the wedding without being obtrusive. It would be far too stressful, and indeed impossible, for a sole camera man to be here, there and everywhere. The two camera people should be able to communicate between themselves (probably wirelessly) so that no important, funny or particularly poignant moments are missed.
What if the weather’s bad?
I’ve heard of stories where a videographer failed to show because it was raining and he didn’t want to risk damage to his equipment. Okay, with high-end equipment I can understand this, but experienced wedding videographers should come ready armed with rain covers for each camera. In the event of high wind which can drown out voices, he should also have fur muffs for each microphone.
Finally, don’t leave the booking of your videographer to chance. A good camera person will be booked up months ahead so make this hiring one of your top priorities.
